Journey of Cliffs & a Millennium of Prayer

A Survival Retreat Tracing the Cliffside Fortress and a Thousand Years of Praye

Futamata in Tenryu Ward, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, was a fierce battleground during Japan's 16th-century era of civil wars--the age of the samurai--while at the same time remaining a land where a culture of prayer has endured for over a thousand years.
War and faith. Tension and tranquility.
In this place where contrasting energies coexist, you will experience the depth of Japanese history and spirituality firsthand.

Highlights

1. Futamata Castle Ruins - A Strategic Walk Along the Cliffs

In the 16th century, Japan was an era of warring feudal lords competing for territory. Futamata Castle was a key stronghold contested by two of the most powerful leaders of the time: Tokugawa Ieyasu (who later became shogun) and Takeda Shingen, one of the era's most formidable warlords.
Built atop dramatic cliffs overlooking the confluence of the Tenryu and Futamata Rivers, the castle made full use of its natural terrain for defense. Here, you will experience the strategic thinking and life-or-death decisions required to survive in an age of constant conflict.

2. Seiryuji Temple & Suwa Shrine -- The Silence of Faith

While bearing the memory of war, this area has continued to protect its traditions of prayer for centuries.
Seiryuji Temple is known as the temple that enshrines Nobuyasu, the eldest son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who lost his life at Futamata Castle. The memory of the young samurai who fell in turbulent times still lingers here.
Surrounded by pine trees, you will steady your breath in this quiet space and sense the spiritual depth of Tenryu, where battle and prayer intersect.

3.Futamata River -- A Waterside Retreat

Visit the clear stream that has long nourished local life as a tributary of the Tenryu River.Listen to the gentle sound of water flowing over rocks and small cascades, and feel the energy of nature.
Depending on the season, a riverside walk along the riverbed may be included.
